| DEER HUNTING | |||||||||||||
| Hunting the high peaks for big game is the ultimate challenge. The numbers of deer in this area are lower than that of the southern counties, but so is the hunting pressure. Deer can get as big as 200 lbs. with racks to match their body weight. Weather plays a part in the methods used, such as wind and whether there is snow on the ground. Also important is the time of year, as in November the rut is on and deer are more active. There may not be large numbers of deer to be seen, but the deer you do see are usually worth the effort. For both deer and bear, the major food source in the fall is Beechnuts. Scouting of these areas begins as soon as the nuts start to drop in the fall. A valid New York State big game license is required for any big game hunting. Please refer to www.dec.state.ny.us. Due to the unpredictable weather at this time of year, accommodations at one of the local hotels or B&B's is recommended. This can be arranged through High Peaks Guide Service with advance notice. |
